Emma of Italy

Emma of Italy (* 948, † October 12 after 988 ) was West Frankish queen and stepdaughter of the East Frankish Emperor Otto I.

Life

Emma was the daughter of King Lothair II of Italy and Adelaide of Burgundy. Her father was poisoned 950, when she was a small child.

Top 966 she was married to the French King Lothar. († November 18 probably before 986 ), the later King Ludwig V. and Otto, a canon at Rheims: The marriage produced two children were born.

In the year 977, she was accused by her brother Charles, Duke of Lower Lorraine, of adultery with Ascelin, the Bishop of Laon. When led by the Archbishop of Reims Adalberon Synod of Sainte- Macré Emma and the bishop were acquitted and Duke Charles was forced to leave France. In order to secure the claims of her son, Louis, Emma persuaded her husband to crown him as co-regent.

The marriage between Emma and Lothar was overshadowed by quarrels and intrigues between Lothar and his brother, Emperor Otto II, which were fueled partly by Charles of Lower Lorraine, a vassal of Otto.

Lothar died in 986 and his son Louis succeeded him as king of France. However, the king banished his mother and the Bishop of Laon from the court, and accused her of having poisoned Lothar. A year later King Louis died without heirs.

Emma spent her last years probably in a monastery in Burgundy, where she also died.
