Emmanuel College (Cambridge)

The Emmanuel College is a college of the University of Cambridge, England.

Since 1998, Emmanuel was regularly placed in the top five colleges in the Tompkins Table, which assesses the colleges of the University of Cambridge to the performance of the undergraduates in the annual exams. Emmanuel was voted at this time five times for best college (2003, '04, '06, '07, '10 ) and took second place six times (2001, '02, '08, '09, '11, '12 ).

The net assets of the College was at the end of the financial year 2010/2011 approximately £ 150 million, included the provisions for pension obligations.

Emmanuel was - like many other colleges - originally only open to men and women as students took in 1979 for the first time on.

History

The college was founded in 1584 by Sir Walter Mildmay. Originally there was the site of the present College, a convent of the Dominicans. However, towards the middle of the 16th century saw the dissolution of the English monasteries by Henry VIII. Mildmay had access to the remains of the monastery in the founding of the College.

In fact, Mildmay persecuted religious goals. As Puritans he intended to train in Emmanuel Protestant preacher to produce a counterweight to the successful Catholic schools that had spawned a long time Dominican friars.

Trivia

Emmanuel has a spacious landscaped garden with a large pond, which offers a colony of ducks and some swans food, shelter and habitat. The Ducks are an unofficial symbol of the College, under the name Green Duck Scheme it has launched an environmental initiative in 2007.

In the gardens, there is in addition a swimming pool, which goes back to an older bathroom of the monks. It should be here to represent one of the oldest swimming pools in Europe.
