Emmanuel Sanon

Emmanuel " Manno " Sanon ( born June 25, 1951 in Port-au -Prince, † February 21, 2008 in Orlando, Florida) was a Haitian soccer player and coach.

Career

In 1974 the Haitian Sanon played football club Don Bosco in Petionville, a suburb of the capital, Port -au -Prince. With the Haitian national team, he qualified for the FIFA World Cup 1974 in Germany. It was so far the only part of the island state of the Caribbean at a World Cup. In this World Cup tournament Sanon created a sensation in the first game. Haiti's first opponent was Italy with the Vice World Champion and one of the tournament favorites. Newcomer Haiti was allowed to calculate any chances. On June 15, 1974 Haiti battled to a 0-0 half- time. Immediately after the restart at the Munich Olympic Stadium Emmanuel Sanon scored in the 46 minutes the guide for Haiti. Italy goalkeeper Dino Zoff had remained up to this time, since the September 20, 1972 1143 international game minutes without conceding a goal. The Fast Forward Sanon ended this record and wrote football history. Haiti still lost the game 1:3. After the team lost against Poland with 0:7 and 1:4 against Argentina. Emmanuel Sanon was again successful in their final group game against Argentina and scored the consolation goal; so he became the first and only scorer of his country in a World Cup.

After the World Cup, he moved to K. Beerschot VAC in the Belgian league, where he remained until 1980. In 1979 he won the Belgian Cup with his team. He then moved to the USA where he was active among other things for the Miami Americans and the San Diego Sockers. Between 1983 and 1997 he was a coach at various high schools and football clubs in the United States. From 1999 to 2000 he was the coach of the national football team of Haiti, with Haiti in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2000 against Peru played a draw in Miami, but was eliminated in the preliminary round with 1:4 goals. 2004/ 05 he was a youth coach of Ajax Orlando Prospects in the United States.

Sanon scored within four years, 47 of 106 gates of the Haitian National Team.

Emmanuel Sanon died in February 2008 at the age of 56 years to cancer.
