Emmelichthyidae

Erythrocles schlegelii

The Emmelichthyidae are a family of perch relatives ( Percomorphaceae ). They live in the sea, especially in tropical and subtropical regions in the Indo-Pacific, the South Pacific, in the eastern Atlantic and the Caribbean. The adult fish keeping especially close to the ground, at depths of 100 to 400 meters.

Features

The jaws are toothless or nearly toothless and strong vorstülpbar. The maxilla is flaky and distally expanded. If the mouth is closed, the maxilla is not covered by the Preorbital bone. The Supramaxillare is well developed. The fish have gills Reuse seven rays. The dorsal fin is continuous. In the genus Erythrocles the hard and the weichstrahlige part are separated by a deep, goes to the very back, at Plagiogeneion by a less deep indentation. In Emmelichthys both fins parts are separated by some single standing hard jets. The caudal fin is forked. Both parts of the caudal fin can be folded together like scissors.

The Emmelichthyidae be, depending on the type, 9-72 inches long.
