Emmen, Netherlands

( Listen? / I ) Emmen is a municipality in the southeast of the Dutch province of Drenthe with 108 411 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013), of which about 85,000 live in the same city and 20,000 in the belonging to the municipality of villages and peat. The city is located on the southeastern end of the Hondsrug.

The city of Emmen is divided into four districts ( Kwadranten ):

  • De Velden ( 17,222 inhabitants)

History

The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. The place Emmen was mentioned in the 12th century for the first time as Curtis Emne ( court of Emmen ) and stayed until the 20th century, a rural village embossed. After the Second World War, the economically weak region was promoted by the state as a development area and settled mainly textile and metal industries. In the early years of the postwar period Emmen was one of the fastest growing cities in the Netherlands. Emmen thus evolved from a poor farming village to a major city. Extensive housing measures were necessary. These were partially planned in great distance from the existing development in order not to destroy valuable natural areas. Characterized the city occupies a relatively large area. Today Emmen is the largest city in the province of Drenthe before the provincial capital Assen.

Policy

Strongest party was in the local elections for the legislature 2010-2014, the PvdA, which reached eleven seats in front of the CDA with 9 seats. The PvdA also provides the mayor with Cees Bijl.

Economy

Traffic

The city is the endpoint of the local railway Zwolle - Ommen - Hardenberg- Coevorden, Emmen. To nearby Meppen performs a cross-border bus route.

It began in 2002 and the motorway A 37 direction Hoogeveen. Also the connection to the motorway A 31 and 25 kilometers away from Meppen ( E233 ) is expanded as a four-lane highway since the end of 2007. The expansion is particularly important for Emmen, as the city is regarded as one of the starting points for the Dutch export to Scandinavia.

Industry

The city has an important synthetic fiber industry. In the environment, natural gas and also gained some oil for about 100 years. Also, a "green business park " for high-tech companies are among the most densely concentrated industrial areas of the north of the Netherlands. Emmen is an important commercial and economic center of the area.

Tourism

Tourism is of great importance in Emmen. Events such as the Full Color Festival, the leave beyond the borders of known largest zoo in the northern Netherlands and the open air museum Veenpark near Emmens new guests keep coming back to Emmen.

Attractions

In the middle of Emmen is the " DierenPark Emmen " one of the most beautiful zoos in the Netherlands. In the village of Barger- Compascuum is the open air museum Veenpark that informs about life in the former peat bog near Emmen.

At the boundary between Veenoord and Nieuw Amsterdam, the painter Vincent van Gogh lived in 1883 for several months. The building was only a few years ago to a small museum with a café prepared ( address: van Goghstraat 1).

On the southern edge of the municipality of Emmen is also extends the International Natural Park Bourtanger moor Bargerveen. Nearby are several small forests, moors and heathlands, which are suitable for hiking and cycling. The area is rich in megalithic tombs. There are several campsites and several smaller hotels.
