Emmerbach

The Emmer Bach in Münster- Amelsbüren

The Emmer Bach is a stream which rises in mountain ash Herbern and from there through the southern outskirts of Münster in Westphalia flows. Later he joins the Werse. The stream is directed into two culverts under the Dortmund -Ems Canal through. As the Emmerbachtal the east of the Dortmund- Ems Canal located local district Hiltrups is called.

First renaturation of previously heavily straightened river already took place in 1986, when a 500 meter section was redesigned as a pilot project and a significant increase in animal and plant diversity was found in the port. In the years 2000 to 2002 was carried out in the framework of the expansion of the Dortmund- Ems Canal, a more elaborate restoration of the Emmer Bach, which has cost about 1.1 million euros and was carried to 80 % by the State of North Rhine -Westphalia. In this flood basins were created and removed concrete sill in the creek. In addition, the bank has been flattened and there planted mainly oaks and hornbeam.

By NABU nature conservation station Munsterland a grazing project with rear cattle and Konik horses will be set up in the Emmerbachaue at Davensberg in conservation and conservation area Davert. The combination of extensive year-round grazing with the creation of new water bodies and woodland habitats should contribute to a natural development of the floodplain.
