Emperor Go-Saga

Go- Saga (Japanese后 嵯峨 天皇, Go- Saga - tennō; * April 1, 1220, † March 17, 1272 ) was the 88th Tenno of Japan (21 February 1242-16 February 1246. ). He was a son of Tsuchimikado - tennō and his own name was Kunihito (邦 仁).

After his father Tsuchimikado had been exiled from Kyoto, the future Tennō grew up in his mother's house.

After its predecessor, the Shijō - tennō 1242 had died without leaving a Kronzprinzen, there was dispute over the succession. The throne remained for eleven days orphaned. Then ascended Go- Saga the throne, on the recommendation of the Kamakura Shogunate, because his father had been relatively neutral in Jōkyū war.

He was known as a strong politician against the shogunate. His power was limited, however, because the shogunate virtually formed the government, especially the military and financial matters. However, the imperial court retained its traditional authority. After four years of government, he voluntarily gave up the throne to two of his sons, first in 1246 to go Fukakusa and 1260 at Kameyama, while he virtually stopped the power from the monastery at the court and prevailed. He also sent a son to Kamakura as Shogun - the first so-called Prince Shogun. After the actual Shōgunfamilie, the house Minamoto ended because the third shogun Minamoto no Sanetomo was murdered, the highest nobles Shogun should be. Go saga continued by his son as shogun and was so also political influence on the shogunate in Kamakura.

Of his two sons came from the two opposing imperial lines.
