Emperor Monmu
Kaiser Mommu (Japanese文 武天皇, Mommu - tennō; * 683, † June 15 707) was the 42nd Tennō of Japan. His proper name was Karu no miko ( Prince Karu ). He ruled from 697-707 in Fujiwara - kyō, today Kashihara, Nara Prefecture.
He was a son of Prince and Princess Kusakabes Ahe. His father was the Crown Prince Kusakabe Temmus so that Mommu is a grandson of Emperor and Empress Temmus Jitos. His mother Ahe was a daughter of Emperor Tenji.
After the abdication of his grandmother, Jitō, his accession to the throne 697/8/17 was announced. He died 10 years later ( 707). His son Obito was still a child, so his mother succeeded to the throne was until the child grow up.
The origins of Noh theater can be traced back to his reign.
