Empyema

When empyema refers to a collection of pus in a preformed (usually natural ) body cavity or a hollow organ. Examples of empyema are the gall bladder, the maxillary sinus empyema, lung and pleural empyema (breast Rippfell - space ) as well as various joint empyema.

Pus without preformed body cavity is called abscess in contrast. A diffusely propagating in the soft tissue purulent infection called cellulitis.

In addition to the clinical history, physical examination and laboratory diagnostics (CRP and leukocytes) are for localization studies such as computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, or sonography (ultrasound) helpful.

Treatment is usually surgical removal of the empyema; often is the insertion of a drainage and systemic antibiotics necessary.
