History

In 1997, the division BASF Magnetics BASF was sold to the newly established company EMTEC Consumer GmbH. The sale included a five-year license to use the BASF brand name. This stamp was printed on all products until 2002. In the transitional period has been advertised with the imprint " BASF made by EMTEC ." After the expiry of the license agreement, only the name Emtec was used. Due to the economic and technical changes in the consumer market that went from analog media to digital media, there was a sharp fall in sales. In 2003 the company became insolvent. On 14 January 2003 Emtec filed with the District Court of Ludwigshafen to the opening of insolvency proceedings. As liquidator Jobst Wellensiek was used.

After the bankruptcy, the company was dissolved and the works closed. The machinery for the production of the tapes were sold to the Dutch manufacturer RMG International. This still produces all common magnetic tapes with the former machine. The Emtec brand now belongs to the French company Dexxon Data Media SAS, which continues to produce memory products under this brand.
