Emtricitabine is a chemical analogue of the nucleoside cytidine. It is an antiviral agent from the group of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors ( NRTI) and is used as a drug ( Coviracil, Triangle Pharmaceutics ) to treat infected with HIV-1 and 2 patients as part of a combination antiretroviral therapy. It is also active against HBV.

Pharmacology

The nucleoside emtricitabine is phosphorylated in the cell to the nucleotide. In competition with the natural nucleotide Desoxycytosintriphosphat ( dCTP ) is emtricitabine -triphosphate incorporation into DNA. The installation of the Didesoxynukleosidtriphosphats leads to chain termination, and for the inhibition of the viral reverse transcriptase.

Pharmacokinetics

Thanks to the long half-life ( Elimiationshalbwertszeit: 10 h, intracellular half-life of the triphosphate: 39 h) once-daily administration is possible.
