Emydidae

Southern Painted Turtle ( Chrysemys picta dorsalis)

The New World pond turtles ( Emydidae ) differs in the structure of the carapace, and the skull of the Old World pond turtles ( Geoemydidae ), which were formerly classed them. There are over 30 species in two subfamilies Deirochelyinae and Emydinae.

Dissemination

As the name suggests, the New World pond turtles live so in the New World in North, Central and South America. One type, however, the European pond turtle ( Emys orbicularis ), lives in Southern and Central Europe, North Africa and Turkey to northern Iran. She is also the only one in Germany, Austria and Switzerland naturally occurring tortoise. However, there are only rare local remainders.

Way of life

Most New World Pond Turtles lead an aquatic bound to aquatic life. The Diamondback Terrapin ( Malaclemys terrapin ) is also in brackish water. The Terrapins ( Terrapene ) tend to live terrestrial, on land.
