En defensa propia (in self defense ) is a Mexican silent film directed by Joaquín Coss from 1917, which can be assigned to the genre of drama. It is one of the first produced by Azteca Films movies, the screenplay was written by Mimí Derba, who participated also in the production and as an actress. The film tells of a relationship drama, in which a woman wants returned from Europe pushing into an intact marriage. The story is probably inspired as most of Mexican films of the period of European films.

Action

The orphaned recently Enriqueta must now work to secure their livelihood. She finds employment with the widower Julio Mancera for which she works as a governess for his little daughter. After some time, the two fall in love and get married. But then returns Julio Manveras cousin, Eva, from Europe and attempt to disassemble bring the harmonious couple. She is almost successful in her plans are, however, at a party, they are for Julio and his friends, thwarted. There she is caught by Julio, Enriqueta and the other guests in a compromising situation with Julio's best friend, Mauricio.

Background

The story that was told in En defensa propia, was not particularly unusual for Mexican cinema this time. Many films dealt with such a relationship dramas, it is also likely that it was an adaptation of a European film. Many of the Mexican films of the period were based mainly on the Italian film, which had then reached one of its highlights. En defensa propia was described by the newspaper El Pueblo as the "first national artistic and twisted film." According to this newspaper, the film was commercially successful. The source location is not good, and in other films, El Pueblo was with their assessments rather in opposition to popular opinion.

Mimí Derba wrote to En defensa propia another film for Azteca films. La soñadora ( The Dreamer ) was also filmed in 1917.
