Encounter (magazine)

Encounter was a controversial literary magazine, founded Stephen Spender and the writer Irving Kristol in 1953 by poet and published in England. In 1990, the magazine ceased publication. She was primarily an intellectual culture magazine for Anglo-American readership.

Donor was editor until 1966. Reason for donor retreat was the uncovering of covert CIA funding of the magazine about the Association for Cultural Freedom (Congress for Cultural Freedom ) that he was not aware of. It caused among European and American intellectuals a scandal that overshadowed the literary content of the magazine ever since. The Encounter was the British counterpart to the French magazine Preuves, the Italian journal Tempo Presente, the Austrian magazine FORVM and to the German magazine Der month.

During the time of Melvin J. Lasky, who succeeded in 1958 Kristol and his main publisher was up to its setting, the Encounter celebrated his greatest successes in terms of readership and influence. The other publishers in this era were Frank Kermode and DJ Enricht.
