Encyclopedia Lituanica

The Encyclopedia Lituanica (probably based on the Encyclopedia Britannica or the Encyclopedia Americana named) is a six-volume encyclopedia in English with more than 3600 pages, describing Lithuania and topics related to Lithuania. It was published 1970-1978 in Boston, Massachusetts, of Lithuanian emigrants who had left Lithuania after the Second World War. To date, there is no comparable comprehensive work on Lithuania in English.

The encyclopedia was published by the same people who had previously been worked out the 1953-1966 Lietuvių enciklopedija, a 35 -volume encyclopedia General in Lithuanian. Later this still 2 volumes with supplements and addenda were added, the 37th and last volume appeared in 1985. The company was particularly difficult by the fact that the majority of sources and reference works was the authors inaccessible behind the Iron Curtain in the Soviet Union.

Many of the entries in the Encyclopedia Lituanica based on the older entries of the Lietuvių enciklopedija that tackled about two- fifths of topics related to Lithuania. The majority of the article was so first written in Lithuanian and only then translated into English. The translations, however, said to have a good quality of reviewers

The encyclopedia was published in the Lithuanian Encyclopedia Press, which had been founded by Juozas Kapočius and this was one. In 1995 Kapočius for his services the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas .. editor of the Encyclopedia Lituanica was Simas Sužiedėlis; in their last band 197 authors are listed, almost exclusively Lithuanians.
