The Enderbyland (English Enderby Land ) is a region in Ostantarktika.

Geography

The Enderbyland located in the eastern part of the Antarctic continent and is bordered to the west in the area of Crown Prince Olav Coast of Queen Maud Land and the east by the Kempküste of Mac Robertson Land The coastline stretches for some 100 km from Shinnangletscher at 44 ° 38 ' E to William Scoresby Bay at 59 ° 34 ' E.

The northern end is the coast on the Southern Ocean in the Indian Ocean, to the south - ie in the direction of the South Pole - there is no clearly defined boundary. The Enderbyland stands out from the neighboring regions in East Antarctica by the effect that it extends like a peninsula relatively wide ( north to 66 ° S ) in the ocean. The most exposed part of the coast is the Cape Borley; the main bays are - from east to west - the Casey Bay, Amundsen Bay and Edward VIII Bay. Off the coast of Enderbylandes are some islands, of which about 20 km long, discovered in 1930, White Iceland (66 ° 44 ' S, 48 ° 35' O 66.73333333333348.583333333333 ) is the most important. The highest point is 2830 m high Mount McMaster (66 ° 47 ' S, 51 ° 58' O 66.78333333333351.9666666666672830 ).

Geology

Enderbyland heard the whole East Antarctica, to the geologically oldest cratons of the Earth and may have been part of the first supercontinent Ur. For the first time there was a hitherto unknown type of rock, the now named after the region Enderbit found.

History

The coast of the region was discovered in February 1831 by the English navigator John Biscoe on board the Tula. He named the area after the brothers Enderby, the owners of London's whaling company Samuel Enderby & Sons, in whose service he was. Today Australia raises territorial claim ( Australian Antarctic Territory ) on the Enderbyland; this is however not recognized internationally because of the validity of the Antarctic Treaty.

Built in 1962 the Soviet Union on the western coast of Enderbylandes the year-round station Molodjoschnaja. In it and the nearby hinterland Japanese summer station Mizuho is now run in the region of polar research.
