Engelberg Abbey

The Engelberg Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in Engelberg in the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland. The monastery was founded by Sellenbüren 1120 by Konrad and colonized by monks from the monastery of Muri. The buildings were constructed after the devastating fire of the monastery in 1729 and are among the largest Baroque areas of central Switzerland. The monastery Engelberg leads a high school and several businesses. In the monastery church is the largest organ in Switzerland.

History

The medieval monastery was destroyed several times by fire. In addition, studied the plague and political disputes in the High and Late Middle Ages multiple home the Engelberg valley.

1690 was the mansion Grafenort in the lower Engelberg Valley as a holiday house for the abbot and monks. It is now used by the monastery for conferences and seminars. The monastery in its present form was built from 1730 to 1745.

After the French invasion and the establishment of the Helvetic Republic, the abbot in 1798 forced to give up ownership of the valley. The former territory of the monastery joined in 1803 the first canton of Nidwalden, then in 1815 the canton of Obwalden.
