Engine tuning

The term engine tuning describes performance-enhancing measures in combustion engines. Performance is measured in HP or kW. The English term actually means tuning (fine) tuning.

History

In the 1970s, the tuning of engines was to describe almost as a national sport, many works have been done at home on their own. Over time, however, companies and well-known car manufacturers discovered this lucrative business. For example, Mercedes has bought up by the three largest competing car tuners of Mercedes AMG models, Brabus and Lorinser the company AMG. This now manufactures tuned vehicles from Mercedes.

Principle

In the theory of motor development to look at the subject performance improvement of an existing machine exclusively from the following three perspectives:

Increasing the average pressure

The medium pressure is the over all work cycles averaged cylinder pressure. All measures except the increase in displacement and the speed increase to serve the medium-pressure increase. That of the combustion pressure must be increased and the pressure loss due to the charge cycle ( suction, expulsion of the combustion gases ) must be reduced.

Increase in stroke volume

The magnification of the displacement increases the mass flow rate and thus the per cycle chemically feasible amount of fuel.

The above two measures are intended not only to improve performance, but also to boost torque.

Increasing the speed of

In view of the performance formula can be achieved by increasing the speed also improved performance. The maximum speed is limited by the flow losses, the time necessary for the mixture formation and the maximum piston speed. An engine needs when starting a low speed but high torque. At constant driving situation is reversed.

If one increases the speed down but not only increases the performance of the torque.

Engine power formula

Or

This formula illustrates the, mentioned under principles practices:

Increasing the fluid pressure (p)

Increase in stroke volume (A * s * z)

Increasing the rotational speed (n )

For the conversion to PS kilowatt number must be divided by 0.7355.

Criticism

Basically, a standard engine in terms of efficiency, environmental impact and the optimum lifetime and should not be changed. It is recommended the same to select the next more powerful version of the corresponding series vehicle in order to avoid a conflict with the law.
