Engineers Without Borders

Engineers Without Borders eV is a non-profit organization which carries out engineering projects in development cooperation. The registered association helps both through knowledge transfer services to other charities and the needy as well as locally in the implementation of specific aid projects. These support services and educational work coming out of Germany.

The association consists of active engineers from various fields as well as architects and engineering students, as well as of active members, supporters and sponsors of other professions.

History

Engineers Without Borders was founded in 2003 in Marburg, in order to create a platform that can be implemented on the engineering projects in development cooperation. A particular focus on sustainable solutions and knowledge-sharing with experts inside and outside of the club. Today, there are regional groups in 32 cities in Germany and five competence groups and over 1,900 supporting members. The association is for members and interested external regular training sessions and workshops on topics related to development cooperation, in which the principles of sustainable development are illustrated with practical examples from the projects.

Organization

Engineers Without Borders eV is organized into regional groups that are spread all over Germany. The national office is located in Berlin at the House of Democracy and Human Rights, Regional groups are in Aachen, Augsburg, Berlin, Biberach, Bielefeld, Bochum, Braunschweig, Bremen, Darmstadt, Dresden, Flensburg, Freiburg, Giessen, Hamburg, Hanover, Ilmenau, Jena to find Kaiserslautern, Kassel, Koblenz, Cologne, Leipzig, Mannheim, Munich, Munster, Nuremberg, Ilmenau, Regensburg, Ravensburg / Weingarten, Stuttgart and Ulm / Neu- Ulm. In addition, cross-regional competence groups consist of the fields of renewable energy, water, Brückenbau-/Hochbau, sanitation and Intercultural Communication / ethnography.

Experts of Engineers Without Borders are working among other things as project managers within the Agency for Technical Relief, the United Nations Environment Programme and consulting company.

The Association is registered with the international association of Engineers Without Borders ( Engineers without Borders international). Engineers and other interested members of the club get full support due to the pooling of experience and expertise from more than 40 countries.

Principle

Engineers Without Borders supports people for does not exist or jeopardizes the supply of basic infrastructure needs through hardship or poverty, regardless of their skin color, belief or religion.

The association triggers acute problems in the areas of water, sanitation and energy supply as well as bridge and improved by the securing of basic infrastructure supply, the living conditions of the people. Successful development cooperation means for the club, with local partners to develop practical and professional solutions in joint projects and implement them. Effective support means that a project is not completed successfully if it can continue to lead independent local people - helping people help themselves.

Projects

Engineers Without Borders has technical assistance primarily in the fields of water supply, sanitation, renewable energy and bridges and building construction. The partner countries are located mainly on the African, Asian and the Latin American continent. Projects are supervised at Engineers Without Borders project groups, which in turn belong to a regional group.

Projects of Engineers Without Borders eV are basically divided into four phases: initial inquiry, exploration, implementation and evaluation, which mainly exploring great importance is attached to. Here, the goal is to examine together with a partner organization, the potential of the project in each project region. In addition to the actual planning of the projects is the absolute principle of helping people help themselves. In order to meet this principle, care is taken in selecting the projects that the people in the partner country stand behind the work and contribute their part to the success of the project. To this end, projects are aligned only by requirements that are registered by organizations and project groups from the partner countries, so there are no needs of engineers be generated without limits.
