Engis ( Walloon Indji ) is a Belgian municipality in the Walloon Region. The place is located in the Belgian province of Liège Huy arrondissement. Engis has 5809 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2012) and an area of ​​27.74 km ².

Location

The village lies in the valley of the Meuse (French Meuse) at an altitude of about 70 meters above sea level. Liege is approximately 13 kilometers (km ) northeast, Namur and Brussels 40 km southwest 76 km northwest (all figures in a straight line from the city center ).

The nearest motorway exit is located 5 km northwest at the neighboring village of Saint -Georges- sur -Meuse in the Belgian motorway A15. Engis itself has a regional railway station on the line Charleroi- Namur -Liège Engis. Historical

In a cave at Engis 1829 by Philippe -Charles Schmerling ( 1790-1836 ) were recovered the first fossil remains of those prehistoric people form scientifically described, which later became known as Neanderthal ( the fossil Engis 2).
