English Premiership (rugby union)

The English Premier League is the top division of the men in the English Rugby Union. It bears the name of the current main sponsor Aviva. It was introduced for the 1987/88 season, and is a professional league that the English Rugby union Rugby Football Union (RFU ) and Premier Rugby Limited ( PRL ) in the form of a joint venture called England Rugby Limited ( ERL ) will be organized. Previous names were Courage League ( 1987/88 to 1996/97), Allied Dunbar Premiership (1997/98 to 1999/ 2000), Zurich Premiership (2000 /01 to 2004/ 05) and Guinness Premiership (2005 /06 to 2009/10 ). Twelve teams are represented in the league.

In the Premiership are in league system, in which each club competes in home and away matches against each other club that played four participants in the play-offs and the six participants in the highest European Cup Heineken Cup competition. The English rugby champion is determined at the end of normal time through the play-offs. All the other six teams who could not qualify for the Heineken Cup, will automatically take on the second European Cup Amlin Challenge Cup contest called part. The Last descends in the RFU Championship, the second- highest division below the Aviva Premiership forms since 2009, and also is a pure professional league.

History

The RFU struggled for many years against the introduction of leagues. She feared this would increase the pressure on clubs having to pay their players and thus to break the amateur ethos. Instead, the clubs organized friendly matches and led by traditional encounters. The only organized tournaments in England were the County Cup and the County Championship - the former for club teams, the latter for the representative teams of the counties. The Daily Telegraph and several regional newspapers such as the Yorkshire Post published lists which abschätzten their performance with the teams in the course of a season.

In 1972 the RFU agreed to the introduction of a national cup competition, which is known as the EDF Energy Cup today. This was followed by regional summary tables and finally the mid-1980s, a national rating scale. Finally, the Courage League was introduced in 1987. In the first season the clubs agreed to kick-off times among themselves. The new league system proved a great success, especially the teams in the top leagues had higher attendances, a greater commitment of sponsors and due to the regularly scheduled games an increase in the levels of performance. Fears that a league could lead to more violence on the field, proved to be largely unfounded.

In the following season, 1988/89 RFU himself took the seasonal planning, and determined the game days. In the early years there was no fixed structure with home and away games because the teams at that time only once competed against each other. Only in 1994 was the introduction of a full program with one home and one away game against every other team. In the 1994/95 season Sky Sports for the first time rendered games live on television; a collaboration that continues to this day. In the season 1996/97 towards the amateur league turned into a professional league. In the 2000 /01 season was a semifinal, so-called play-off, introduced, on which the four best teams in the regular season participate.

Finances

Aviva Premiership clubs in the allowed per season to spend 2.25 million pounds to pay their players. Until the 2004/05 season this salary cap was still 2 million. In addition, the Rugby Football Union will pay the clubs a compensation of £ 30,000 for any English players, under the condition that it is optional for international matches. The problem is that the top players are far more than this £ 30,000 worth and some clubs why not use their best players throughout the season, so as to minimize the risk of injury.

During the season 2006/ 07 1539334 135 spectators attended the championship games, which corresponds to an average of 11,402. This was more than half more than in the 2001/ 02 season, when the cut even 7,490 spectators per game, respectively. This increase is mainly due to the success of the England team in the World Cup 2003.
