Engolo

NíGolo is an older African martial art ( the zebras dança ) is also called Zebra dance. The martial art is a ritual battle of the Bantu and Mucupis peoples; they influenced the Capoeira movement by African slaves who were shipped to Brazil.

The ritual said that if a boy between 12 to 15 years came to the age of marriage, his father chose those men from the tribal community, the most possessed (eg cattle or country). Against these men, the boy now had to put his bravery and his ability to provide for his future wife, to the test.

The fight was as follows: Two or more fighters attacked on with head, hands and feet, with hands and feet were grounded. The first, lying on the ground or gave up the fight, should bring shame on his tribe. In contrast, the winner received the bride as a reward.
