With the release of the first single was unknown who is behind the project, as the protagonists still published under pseudonyms. After a few days first suspicions were raised, after which it should be the voice of the singer Sandra. Only after weeks, the presumption had become loud that it could be a project of Michael Cretu. After months of publicly expressed and confirmed that Enigma entstamme his forge. In fact, it was a joint project of Michel Cretu ( Curly MC) and the Hamburg producer Frank Peterson success (F. Gregorian ), who was then still a keyboardist with Sandra. By Frank Peterson then got the idea to mix Gregorian choirs under the music. Frank Peterson but got out after the first album from the project in order to devote himself to his own new project Gregorian.

Michael Cretu said in an interview that he enjoyed it, that you can only know his music, but he still can still walk unrecognized through the streets.

To date, the studio albums are more or less successful internationally.

Enigma is not only more than 40 million records sold, the most successful music project of all time, but also served as a precursor for many other artists that Michael Cretu followed the path of meditative, religious -themed ambient music, which is often referred to as ethnic.
