Enoch Louis Lowe

Enoch Louis Lowe ( born August 10, 1820 Frederick, Maryland; † August 23, 1892 in Brooklyn, New York City ) was an American politician and 1851-1854 Governor of Maryland.

Early years

Enoch Lowe attended St. Johns School in Frederick, the Clongowa Wood College in Ireland and then to 1839 a Jesuit College in England. After a subsequent law degree, he was admitted in 1842 as a lawyer. After that he began in Frederick County to work as a lawyer.

Governor of Maryland

In 1845, Lowe was elected as a member of the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives from Maryland and on October 2, 1850 as the new governor of his state. He began his three-year term on 6 January 1851. During his tenure, the state constitution of Maryland has been revised and completed the rail link from Baltimore to the Ohio River. The electoral law was also amended as the penal laws of the state. At that time, the Court ( Office of the Comptroller ) was founded. The governor also worked on the reduction of public debt. In the national conflict between the North and the South Lowe stood on the side of the South.

In 1860 Enoch Lowe was in the presidential elections of the democratic electors. During the Civil War he supported the Confederacy. During the last decades of his life he was no longer politically active. He died in 1892., With his wife Esther Winder Polk he had eleven children.
