Enric Prat de la Riba

Enric Prat de la Riba i Sarra ( born November 29, 1870 in Castellterçol; † August 1, 1917 ibid ) was the first President of the Mancomunitat de Catalunya ( the " community of Catalonia " ) and one of the vocal leaders of the newly awakened Catalan national sentiment in the 19. century.

As the son of wealthy family Enric Prat de la Riba studied law in Barcelona and Madrid. 1887 entered the Centre Escolar Catalanista who originated a first definition of Catalanism. In 1890 he was appointed president of this institution. In 1892 he took over as secretary at the meeting in part that wrote the Bases de Manresa, an important document of the Catalan autonomy history.

As President of the Provincial Council of Barcelona in 1907, he founded the Institute of Catalan Studies - Institut d' Estudis Catalans that. He also proposed the creation of Mancomunitat de Catalunya, its first president was on 6 April 1914 until his death. The Mancomunitat de Catalunya was responsible for the construction of major infrastructure projects and the development of civilian and cultural facilities and institutions, some of which still endure.

Prat de la Riba held a number of positions within the Unio Catalanista from which he tried to awaken the consciousness katalanistische with the writing of manifestos, including Missatge al Rei Hel · dels lens in 1897.
