Enrico Paoli

Enrico Paoli ( born January 13, 1908 in Trieste, † 15 December 2005 in Reggio Emilia ) was an Italian chess player and chess composer.

Chess player and editor

Paoli learned from a customer in the business of his mother the game of chess at the age of nine years. He was three times (1951, 1957, 1968) Italian masters and initiated in 1958 in Reggio Emilia chess tournament Torneo di Capodanno, which has since been held annually. Paoli wrote many chess books and contributed in 1950 to the chess magazine L' Italia Scacchistica at. In 1974 he was judge of the Chess Olympiad in Nice. In June 2004 he had due to an eye disease stop writing about chess.

Paoli was in 1951 appointed to the International champion, missed 1969 by half a point the grandmaster title, but got in 1996 by the World Chess Federation FIDE awarded the Grandmaster title honorary.

According to Bill Wall Paoli was the oldest active chess player with 97 years, this record has since been overtaken by Francisco Benkö.

More than 150 studies of Enrico Paoli has been published in many countries.

Private

At the age of 18 years Paoli received a license to captain and then worked for seven years for Lloyds of Trieste on the sea road. On his travels he learned many languages. He also earned a degree in business management. After the Second World War, Paoli moved in Reggio Emilia, where he worked as a teacher in a primary school.

Paoli was married for 70 years, from his marriage was a daughter, Livia forth. 2005 Paoli was admitted to a hospital, where he was at least a month and died on the night of 15 December 2005.
