Enrique V. Iglesias

Enrique Valentín Iglesias García [ enrike iɣlesi̯as ] ( born March 30, 1930 in Arancedo ) is a Uruguayan economist and politician of Spanish origin.

Biography and career

Iglesias was born in 1931 in Asturias, Spain. 1934 emigrated with his family to Uruguay. Iglesias, meanwhile received the Uruguayan nationality, successfully concluded an Economic and Administrative Studies in Montevideo. This study then he deepened in the U.S. and France. From 1952 to 1967 he lectured at the Instituto de Estudios Económicos of the Department of Economic Development at the University of Montevideo. Accompanying it was from 1961 to 1965 Technical Director of the Oficina Nacional de Planeamiento del Uruguay.

Iglesias, a member of the Partido Nacional was, then from 1967 to 1968 president of the Banco Central del Uruguay. Furthermore, he had from 1972 to 1985, the position of the Executive Secretary in the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean ( ECLAC) held. From 1985 to 1988 he held the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay from 1988 to 2005, he served as President of the Inter-American Development Bank. Since 2005 he has been Secretary General of the Ibero-American alliance.
