Enrofloxacin is an antibiotic from the group of drugs called fluoroquinolones.

Properties

Enrofloxacin is a gyrase inhibitor and is bactericidal. Following both oral and parenteral administration there is a high bioavailability. Elimination is primarily via the kidney. The half-lives are depending on the species between 2 to 7 hours, metabolite is the ciprofloxacin.

Areas of application

Enrofloxacin is used as an anti-infective agent for the treatment of infectious diseases in dogs, chickens, calves, cats, cattle, small pets, turkeys, rabbits for fattening and pigs. It has a good effect against a variety of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae ( swine erysipelas ), Haemophilus spp., Salmonella spp., Mycoplasma (M. bovis & M. hyopneumoniae ), Pasteurella spp. and staphylococci. Depending on the species is the treatment of specific diseases in the foreground:

  • Pigs: diseases of the digestive tract ( Colidiarrhoe -septicemia ), enzootic pneumonia and MMA syndrome of sows

Interactions

With simultaneous use of chloramphenicol, tetracycline or macrolide antibiotics may lead to antagonistic effects. At present there is no resistance to quinolones effectiveness, as compared to all fluoroquinolones is a cross-resistance. In cases of confirmed streptococcal infection should be dispensed to an application due to the low efficacy.

Application forms

Enrofloxacin can be administered intravenously, subcutaneously or orally as a solution or tablet.

Side effects

A particular sensitivity to enrofloxacin have mainly growing dogs and turkeys. There are severe damage to the cartilage growth, so that use in this age group generally not allowed ( contraindicated ) is.
