Germany

Most lies the Einschulalter in Germany, depending on the province, 5-7 years. Normally, a child who has up to a specific date ( depending on the province between 30 June and 31 December ) in a calendar year age of six years shall be obliged to go to the next possible date in the school. It is then under the compulsory education. In most states and in many European countries, children are medically examined in the school entrance examination prior to their enrollment.

The parents are at liberty to apply for a child born after the respective date child a previous enrollment when it is ready for school. For a deferral, there are different procedures in the individual federal states.

In recent times, there have been considerations in the context of the PISA debate, reduce the Einschulalter to 5 years, what has already happened in individual states. In other states this is being gradually shifted over the course of several years of transitional arrangements several months forward. In some states, there is the possibility of a flexible school entry phase, whereby the account of the performance and maturity of the individual child should be better supported.

The dates for the registration of the primary schools are not standardized. Possible applications are well ahead of the summer holidays, in other states are the dates for school enrollment in the summer holidays.

The voice of parents in the school choice is regulated differently in the individual federal states. Sometimes there are solid school districts (also known as school districts ) where, depending on the residence of visiting a particular school rule is mandatory, in part, is a completely free choice of school ( possibly also over municipal borders ).

Customs for enrollment

The cornet is common only in the German language area. This is - filled with candy and / or small gifts - usually by the parent or guardian. It is opened only in the school. In some regions, the cornet in kindergarten or with parents is tinkered at home, in other regions of the cornet is bought ready.

After the first day of school you will normally still photographed with cornet and school bag. A widespread custom is that the child stands in front of or next to a chalkboard. On the board of the location, date and the words " my first day of school " are written.

The first day of school is solemnly celebrated in most schools. This can include:

  • An ecumenical worship service enrollment
  • A performance by the 3./4.Klassen
  • Solemn summary of new students under the leadership of the new class teacher from the school hall or recreation hall in the classrooms.

Especially in the east of Germany it is common to already have in kindergarten prepare for the introduction by the sugar bag hard. In Saxony, it is common to the actual enrollment on Monday to place after the start of school ( school starts after summer holidays on Thursday ) and on the intervening Saturday, " school entrance " to celebrate. Most often this is done in the host school, then many family gatherings will take place in private.

Enrollment in other countries

Switzerland

Since education is the responsibility of the cantons, the enrollment is specifically regulated.

For example, in the Aargau have children who have completed the sixth year of age by 30 April, to attend school from the earliest possible date.

For lack of maturity compulsory education may be postponed accordingly, with special talent an earlier enrollment is possible on request.

Depending on the municipality or province, there are weaker for children enrollment year, which can be inserted before the first regular school year.

United States

In the U.S., where most children attend before enrollment already have some form of preschool program ( day care, preschool, Head Start ), the admission of a child is not seen in the primary school of the families in the same measure as drastic event such as in the German countries. As a result, special customs for enrollment are not widespread. They are replaced by those customs, committing the American families at the beginning of each new school year, such as the common shopping new clothes, new pins, etc.

A compulsory education such as in Germany there are in the United States do not, there is a so-called compulsory education. Accordingly, the parents can decide for themselves whether they send their child to a school, or, for example inform themselves in the form of homeschooling. The compulsory education begins with the completion of the 6th year of life, usually the admission occurs at the age of five years, when the children in the kindergarten stage of primary school ( elementary school ) occur.

As a reporting requirement in the United States is not, it is for the parent or guardian to register their children at a school of their choice on their own initiative. The enrollment requirements include a psychological aptitude test, a pediatric health certificate and proof of its common in children vaccinations.
