Entertainment Software Association

The Entertainment Software Association ( ESA) is an American organization that was founded in 1994 as Interactive Digital Software Association ( IDSA ) and renamed in 2003. Headquarters of the Organization is Washington, D.C.

The ESA is concerned among other things, the management of copyright and market analysis and government relations of manufacturers of game software for consoles, home computers and the Internet. It also aligns the computer trade show E3.

As part of the public relations ESA lists on their website to economic and social facts about video games. A link between violence in video games and in reality denies them here. However, there are currently conflicting theories on the subject. Also the influence of video games on the everyday life, the Company entered into a series of articles on their website. It also contributes money together for various youth projects that do not deal with video games.

The ESA ensure, inter alia, contain black copies, so the abandonware site Abandonia does not offer games by members of the ESA for download. In several court cases and events as well as ESA fought against restrictions concerning the sale of video games.

Meanwhile, several companies have emerged again from the ESA in recent years. So announced in May 2008 with Activision, Vivendi Games, LucasArts and id Software's four well-known companies their membership. In the same year, Codemasters and NC Interactive left the organization. Crave Entertainment announced 2008 also membership, renewed it the following year but again. Other former members include KOEI, MTV Games, Playlogic Entertainment and SouthPeak Games.
