Entroncamento is a city in Portugal and the administrative seat of the homonymous district. It is located in the district of Santarém and has 20,065 inhabitants ( 2004).

History

Entroncamento (literally branching ) was created in 1864 by a railway junction of the lines Lisbon Porto ( Linha do Norte ) and the Linha do Leste that leads from Abrantes to Spain. The railway town, was one of 24 August 1926 to 1945 to Vila Nova da Barquinha, but was charged a separate municipality and town on 26 November 1945. On 20 June 1991 Entroncamento became a town.

Railway junction

In Entroncamento is not only the only rail yard and the central maintenance facility in Portugal, but also the National Railway Museum, the Museu National Ferroviário. It was founded on 17 February 2005. On 20 June 2008, the new engine shed was inaugurated. He stands on the site of a building from the 60s of the 20th century, which was demolished in 1976. The museum is open daily, except Mondays, open (14:00 bis 17:30 clock, guided tours in Portuguese on the hour ).
