Environmental medicine

Environmental Medicine is the study of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases that are associated with environmental factors.

Areas of activity

It includes environmental health, epidemiology and preventive medicine centers of gravity ( water, soil, air hygiene and hygiene of food, household consumer goods, construction and sanitation including noise interference, protection against ionizing radiation, consumer health protection ).

It includes the medical care of individuals with health problems or abnormal examination findings, which are returned by them or medically to environmental factors.

The specialist for Hygiene and Environmental Medicine

In order for a completed medical studies in Germany to work as specialists in hygiene and environmental medicine, it requires a five-year training period:

  • 4 years Hygiene and Environmental Medicine, are credited to this: 1 1/2 year microbiology and infectious disease epidemiology or
  • 1 years occupational medicine or pharmacology and toxicology or
  • 1/2 year pathology and forensic medicine.

One year must be completed with a registered doctor.

The additional designation Environmental Medicine

As a doctor, you can also alternatively seek the additional designation Environmental Medicine. To obtain this additional qualification required are:

  • Recognition of a territory or 4 years of creditable training time,
  • 1 1/ 2 years at a training center, of which a maximum of 6 months of theoretical training, as well as
  • Taking a course in Environmental Medicine of 200 hours within two years.

In some districts Medical Association is an environmental health investigation by health insurance (eg in Westphalia- Lippe).
