Eodiscina

Cephalopyge notabilis GEYER, 1988

  • Worldwide

The Eodiscina are a group of trilobites, a class of extinct arthropods meeresbewohnender, and be counted among the Agnostida.

Features

Eodiscinen are diminutive trilobites, which were limited in duration to the Cambrian (2nd and 3rd series). The most distinctive features of this group of animals are the two or three Pleuralsegmente of the thorax as well as the less differentiated spindle rings of the pygidium.

Occurrence

It is believed a planktonic lifestyle, which may also explain the wide geographical distribution of some species. This, as well as the ephemeral nature of individual Eodiscinenarten, this predestined as index fossils. A popular example is the trilobite from the Middle Cambrian Cephalopyge notabilis of Morocco, which is the index fossil of the notabilis Zone. Nevertheless Eodiscinen generally are relatively rare. An exception is, for example, the Cambrian Eodiscidenschiefer of Görlitz (Saxony ) where the species Serrodiscus ( Eodiscus ) silesius occurs in layers often.
