Épagny, Haute-Savoie

Épagny is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Épagny is located on 455 m above sea level. M., about 5 km north- west of the town of Annecy (air line). The village is located in the basin of Annecy in the foothills of the Alps, in a wide Talniederung that is drained by the Nant de Gillon for Fier, at the southern foot of the Montagne de Mandallaz, in Genevois.

The area of ​​6.77 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the basin of Annecy. The central area is occupied by the nearly 2 km wide valley at the southern foot of the Montagne de Mandallaz, formerly represented a vast marshland. Today the level is drained and is drained by the Nant de Gillon south. In the far south, the area extends up to the plateau of Poisy. History

Épagny is first mentioned in the 14th century in the documents. The name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Hispanius or Spanius and means something like estate of Hispanius.

Population

With 3984 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Épagny belongs to the medium-sized towns in the Haute-Savoie region. Since the early 1960s was due to the proximity to Annecy recorded a marked increase in population. During the last four decades, the population has increased almost tenfold. Outside the old town center and along the main street extensive residential areas and industrial zones were built.
