Epauvillers

Epauvillers was until December 31, 2008, a municipality in the district Franches- Montagnes in the canton of Jura in Switzerland.

She has merged with effect on 1 January 2009 along with Epiquerez, Montenol Montmelon Ocourt, Saint- Ursanne and Seleute to the municipality Clos du Doubs. The former municipal area has been reallocated to the merger of the district Freiberg mountains in the district Pruntrut.

Geography

Epauvillers is located on 696 m above sea level. Level, 12 km north-east of the district municipal seat Saignelégier (air line). The village is located in a depression in the southern slopes of the Jura chain of the Clos du Doubs, approximately 230 m above the valley of the Doubs.

The area of ​​8.4 km ² large former municipal area includes a portion of the Clos du Doubs. To the south, the area on the foothills that drop very steeply to the Doubs ( Sous les Roches ) is sufficient, up to the deep river. In the north the broad crest of the Fin du Teck included ( 892 m above sea level. M. ) and the Bois de Villers ( 917 m above sea level. M. the highest point of the municipality ) to Epauvillers. The eastern boundary formed the rocky outcrop of Chételat ( 841 m above sea level. M. ). From the municipality surface 1997 3 % was attributable to settlements, 43 % of forest and shrubs, 53% to agriculture and slightly less than 1% was unproductive land.

To Epauvillers included several individual farms. Neighboring communities of Epauvillers were Seleute, Saint- Ursanne, Montenol Montmelon Saint- Brais and Epiquerez.

Population

With 136 inhabitants ( end of 2007) Epauvillers was one of the small communities of the Canton of Jura. Of the 98.0% inhabitants are French-speaking and German-speaking 2.0 % (as of 2000). Since 1888 (then 320 inhabitants), the population of Epauvillers has halved. 1900 were still counted 251 inhabitants.

Economy

Epauvillers is a predominantly agricultural village embossed with dairy farming, cattle breeding and agriculture. Outside the primary sector jobs in the village hardly exist. Many workers are therefore commuters and work in Saint- Ursanne.

Traffic

The former municipality is located off the major thoroughfares on a main road that leads from Saint- Ursanne to Soubey. On this route, post bus course, connects the Epauvillers to public transport.

History

Epauvillers is first mentioned in 1139 as Villare in a document by Pope Innocent II in the ownership of the monastery of Saint- Ursanne. In the following period the name Vilaire ( 1175 ), Vilario ( 1173 ), Vilers (1210 ) and in the 16th century skin -Villers appear. Only at the beginning of the 18th century, the name changed to Epauvillers. The town was under the provost of Saint- Ursanne. Between 1793 and 1815 belonged Epauvillers to France and was initially part of the département du Mont- Terrible, associated from 1800 with the Department of Haut -Rhin. By the decision of the Congress of Vienna, the place came in 1815 to the canton of Bern and on 1 January 1979 at the newly founded Canton Jura.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Arnoux was rebuilt in the 17th century, later rebuilt in 1965 and last renovated. The site is dominated by typical farmhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries. The school in the home style dates from 1928.
