Epeli Hau'ofa

Epeli Hau'ofa (* 1939 in Papua New Guinea; † January 11, 2009 in Suva ) was a Fijian writer and professor of anthropology.

Life

Epeli Hau'ofa, son of a missionary family from Tonga, studied in Papua, Tonga, Fiji, Australia and Canada; his PhD in anthropology, he received from the Australian National University. He was the palace archivist in Tonga, head of the sociology department and director of the School of Social and Economic Development at the University of the South Pacific.

In 1997 he founded the Oceania Centre for Arts and Culture, of which he was. His publications include the ethnography Mekeo, a collection of short stories ( Tales of the Tikongs ), the novel Kisses in the Nederends and articles on the topic A New Oceania. Hau'ofa was last citizen of Fiji.
