Ependes is a municipality in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Ependes located 447 m above sea level. Level, 5 km southwest of the district capital Yverdon- les- Bains ( straight line ). The scattered village extends slightly increased at the southeastern edge of the Orbeebene, at the foot of the northern slopes of the plateau of Gros de Vaud, in the Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​4.8 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the northern Vaud Mittelland. The larger northern part of the municipality is occupied by the flat Orbeebene (435 m above sea level. M. ) and extends over the Canal Oriental (part of Entrerocheskanals ) to channelized Thielle. To the south of the municipality of soil extends over a steep slope on the plateau north of Suchy, which is divided by the small valley of the village stream Ependes. Population

With 333 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Ependes one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 90.0 % inhabitants are French-speaking, 3.1 % and 2.8 % portugiesischsprachig in German (as of 2000). The population of Ependes amounted in 1850 to 320 inhabitants, in 1900 only 249 inhabitants. After the population had decreased in the meantime to 205 inhabitants ( 1980), a significant population increase has been registered since then again.

Economy

Ependes was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the farming and fruit growing have an important role in the economic structure of the population. A land area of ​​more than 1 km ² has been leased by the sugar factories Aarberg and Frauenfeld AG for the cultivation of sugar beets. In addition, there are several horticultural businesses. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. From 1830 to 1971 Ependes was the site of a dairy cooperative. In recent decades, Ependes has also developed into a residential community. Many employed persons are therefore commuters who work mainly in Yverdon.

Traffic

The community is conveniently technically quite well developed. It lies on the old main road from Yverdon Chavornay. The highway connecting Yverdon -Sud at the 1981 opened A1 (Lausanne -Yverdon ) that crosses the municipality, approximately 4 km, the port Chavornay is about 5 km from the center. History

The territory of Ependes was settled very early, which is attested by prehistoric fortifications on the hill La Poëpe east of the village. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1154 under the name Spinles. Later, the names Espinnes ( 1160 ), Espindes ( 1216) Espignes ( 1227 ) and Spinnes ( 1251 ) published. The place name comes from the Latin word spinas ( thorn, thorn ).

Since the Middle Ages Ependes was part of the reign of Belmont. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick of Yverdon, where it belonged to Kastlanei Belmont. After the collapse of the ancien régime Ependes belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Yverdon.

Attractions

The church, already mentioned in 1228, was under the average age of the Norbertine Lac de Joux (L' Abbaye ). It was in 1787 increased due to the frequent flooding in the Orbeebene. Near the station is the Castle of Ependes, a manor house dating from the 18th century.
