Ephraim of Nea Makri

Efrem of Nea Makri (* September 14, 1384 in Attica, Greece (Greek Άγιος Εφραίμ Νέας Μάκρης ); † May 5, 1426 ) was a martyr and miracle-worker; he is not to be confused with Ephrem the Syrian.

History

Efrem was born on 14 September 1384. Early on, he was raised as an orphan only by his mother along with six other brothers. At 14 he went to the Monastery of the Annunciation in the monastery hill at Nea Makri and lived there for about 27 years an ascetic life. He was ordained monk. On September 14, 1425 began on the feast of the Exaltation his martyrdom with his capture by the Ottomans. It was completed on May 5, 1426 a Tuesday, at 9 clock in the morning. Since he was 42 years old. He died headlong bound to an olive tree, which still exists today, and nailed with nails on the head and the feet. Finally, pierced his body strewn with wounds at the navel with a burning piece of wood.
