Epibatidine is a glandular secretion from the skin of poison dart frog ( Epipedobates tricolor) derived alkaloid with bicyclic structure. It is present in an amount of less than 1 mg per frog. Epibatidine exceeds the analgesic effect of morphine to about 200 times, and the affinity of nicotine to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors to 120-fold. Epibatidine is a potent analgesic, however, too toxic for use in humans.
Starting from the epibatidine only slightly toxic non-opioid analgesic ABT -594 was developed in 1996, is among the azetidines.
