Epigastrium

The epigastrium of man is the abdominal region between the rib cage and belly button and is therefore also referred to as the upper abdomen as well as more restrictive than stomach.

In the upper abdomen are the stomach, duodenum, pancreas, liver and gallbladder as well as right, left, below the ribs, deep in the abdomen, the spleen. Otherwise, parts of the colon and small intestine are located in the upper abdomen. In slim people can be palpated at least above the navel, the aorta to the left of the midline.

This diversity of structures and the fact that pain can be projected to the upper abdomen when in the vicinity bodies lying suffering makes, saying that the investigation of abdominal pain requires careful investigation.

Even with myocardial infarction and pektanginösen complaints and appendicitis (with upturned appendix ) may spread to the upper abdomen pain.

In somatization also pain, bloating or rare tingling are often given in the upper abdomen.
