Epiglottal consonant

Epiglottal referred to in phonetics a place of articulation. Epiglottale sounds are formed by the aryepiglottic fold is pressed against the epiglottis.

The international phonetic alphabet has three epiglottale consonants, all of which do not exist in German:

  • Voiceless plosive epiglottaler [ ʡ ]
  • Voiced epiglottaler fricative [ ʢ ]
  • Voiceless fricative epiglottaler [ ʜ ]

Epiglottale Trille also occur, but are not phonemic and therefore have no representation in the international phonetic alphabet. In the literature, sometimes the symbol [ ᴙ ] will be used.

Epiglottale consonants occur mainly in the Caucasus and in Canada.
