Epipodius and Alexander

Epipodius and Alexander ( † 178 in Lyon) were Christian martyrs and saints.

Epipodius and Alexander were, according to legend, two befriended each other citizens of Lugdunum (Lyon ) who were persecuted for their Christianity. Epipodius come from Lugdunum itself, while Alexander was of Phrygian origin. After 177 years in numerous Christians of the city had been executed (see Blandina and POTHINUS ), also Epipodius was denounced by his servant to the Roman authorities as a Christian, subject to numerous tortures and was beheaded. Alexander was then two days later also tortured and then crucified, the Roman Martyrology mentions that another 34 Christians were martyred with him.

Worship

In the Martyrology of Alexander is thought on January 14, the remainder is for both Holy January 12th Remembrance Day. The relics of the two saints were buried in the 6th century on the site of the relics of Saint Irenaeus of Lyons under the altar of the Cathedral of Lyon. Epipodius is the patron saint of students, as well as the victims of fraud and torture.
