Eponymous archon

Archon eponymous (Greek ἄρχων ἐπώνυμος ) was an official in ancient Athens. The original position of the Office is controversial, probably took the eponymous archon Basileus after the governance, while the priests tasks and warfare with other archons were.

Archaic period

The archon eponymous was most likely the " top officials " Athens in the Archaic period and Head of the polis. His name was the year the name and presumably he was superior of the other eight archons, Athens supreme judge and supreme warlord, but this is controversial. As commander of the Archon Polemarchus is seen often.

Classical time

The eponymous archon was still supreme judge Athens and stood in front of the college of archons. He was responsible for the care of the family and inheritance law, he was the "keeper of the family." This included presided over a trial in this area. He led the large congregation festivals, the Dionysia and Thargelien, and ordered the choirs and Choregen and the hard embassies to Delos.
