Equilibrium moisture content

Equilibrium moisture content (also: equilibrium moisture content, moisture balance, practical moisture content ) is that water content, resulting in a building material after prolonged storage in a room with constant relative humidity and constant temperature.

Hygroscopic materials (such as building materials, paper ) take account of their internal structure (type, number, size and distribution of the cavities ) dependent on the relative humidity and temperature of the ambient air has a certain moisture content, which is long enough after storage of the substance in the air is established.

The movement of moisture between the material and the surrounding area is to the partial water vapor pressure ( in materials and the environment) is balanced. This sorption takes place mainly in the first one or two inches of the wall surface.

DIN 4108 calls the quick moisture content for a variety of materials, such as:

  • Bricks: 1.5 vol - %
  • Concrete: 15 vol - %
  • Wood: 15% by mass
  • AAC: 3.5 mass %
