Equinox (OSGi)

Equinox (from english day and night are equally long ) is a system developed by the Eclipse Foundation Java -based framework that implements the OSGi core specification and forms the backbone of the integrated development environment Eclipse.

Implemented in addition to the Equinox OSGi standard additional functionalities, such as the extension registry, which allows to register Eclipse extensions and use it.

The project was born in 2003, should be changed as Eclipse on a plug- in - based structure. In order to enable the decision was made to use the OSGi platform. 2004 was released with Eclipse 3.0, the first based on Equinox version. In addition to Eclipse, other applications and frameworks are based on Equinox. For example, IBM Workplace or developed by ProSyst mBedded Server Equinox Edition.
