Ercolano
Ercolano is a town on the southern slopes of Mount Vesuvius, 53 260 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Naples in the Italian region of Campania.
Location and data
Ercolano is located 8 km southeast of Naples, near the Gulf of Naples. The city stands on the site of the ancient city of Herculaneum.
The neighboring municipalities are Boscotrecase, Massa di Somma, Ottaviano, Pollena Trocchia, Portici, San Giorgio a Cremano, San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, Santa Anastasia, Somma Vesuviana, Torre del Greco and Trecase.
History
The town was founded by the Greeks as Herakleion. The exact founding year is unknown. 89 BC, the city was Roman and was called Herculaneum. This city was buried in 79 AD by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Until 1969 it was known as Resina.
