Eretmodini

Eretmodus cyanostictus

The Eretmodini, also called the German Grundelbuntbarsche, are a tribe of cichlids ( Cichlidae ). The four types of Eretmodini live in endemic Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. The monophyly has been proven by various morphological features and examination of DNA sequences. All Grundelbuntbarsche live on the ground close to the coast above a depth of 1.8 meters. They move with a jerky " hopping " on the seabed. All Eretmodini are mouth brooders.

Features

The Eretmodini are small cichlids with laterally compressed bodies and lengths of 7-10 cm. The mouth is inferior and can be acute or wide. The outer teeth are out and serve to grate nursery from the rocky ground. The coloration of the fish is usually gray or brownish with vertical stripes on the sides of the body or light blue dots in the upper half of the body. The swim bladder is small.
