Ergometrine, also called ergonovine or ergobasine, is a naturally occurring chemical compound from the group of ergot alkaloids.

Occurrence

Ergometrine is one of the main alkaloids, which is produced by the ergot fungus Claviceps purpurea as well as other representatives of the family of Clavicipitaceae and can moreover be detected in different wind plants.

Its isolation from the ergot was first described in 1935 by Arthur Stoll.

Use

This alkaloid is used twitch effect in obstetrics due to its womb. Due to the danger of constant contractions its application to postpartum for placental attachment, and to stop bleeding after placental detachment and regression of the uterus is limited in the puerperium. Although ergometrine is listed in the WHO list of essential medicines, this substance plays, unlike his descendant methylergonovine, in the Western world no therapeutic role.
