Eric I, Duke of Saxe-Lauenburg

Erich I of Saxe- Lauenburg ( * before 1285, † 1360 in Nienburg / Weser) was 1285-1360 Duke of Saxe- Lauenburg. He was the son of Duke John I of Saxe- Lauenburg († 1285).

Eric I had only prepared in Magdeburg on tasks in the spiritual realm and was getting a member of the cathedral chapter. He first ruled jointly with his brothers Albert III. of Saxe- Lauenburg and John II of Saxe- Lauenburg. After her father's death, there was however already soon to several regional divisions that fragmented as Realteilung the territory:

  • In 1295 /96 separation in Saxony -Wittenberg and Saxe-Lauenburg
  • 1305 Saxe-Lauenburg was divided into thirds in the remaining Lauenburg part in the three lines after Duke Johann I..

The inheritance discussion, however, was superimposed and delayed by the dispute over the Saxon- Lauenburg electoral vote. After the death of the childless Duke Albrecht III. in 1308 Erich I. the third grew again, for which he had to wear his mother's jointure. In 1321 he had to give up even Bergedorf to his brother John II († 1321 ). Thus, the separation was carried out and completed in two independently operating lines of the house without a common government. However, the lines Bergedorf - Mölln and Ratzeburg -Lauenburg remained thus connected, they further divided the revenue from the südelbischen Hadeln.

Eric I moved from early 1339 his son Duke Erich II in the affairs of government, and took up residence on the Riepenburg in today Kirchwerder. He was ousted from there due to a dispute between the Lüneburg Dukes and his son and died on the journey to Hoya in Nienburg.
