Eric Louw

Eric Hendrik Louw ( born November 21, 1890 in Jacobsdal, † June 24, 1968 in Cape Town) was a South African ambassadors and politicians.

Life

Louw studied in Beaufort West on the Victoria College in Stellenbosch, at Rhodes University. From 1917 to 1918 he practiced the profession of lawyer in Grahamstown. He managed the company of his family in Beaufort West. From 1924 to 1925 and from 1938 to 1963 he sat for the National Party (South Africa) in Parliament. From 1948 to 1954 he was Handelsbeautragter of the Union of South Africa in the United States of America and Canada. In 1929 he was High Commissioner ( Commonwealth ) in London. From 1929 to 1933 he was ambassador in Washington, DC and then in Rome.

From 1933 to 1937 he was ambassador to Paris and from 1948 to 1953, he served in the cabinet of Daniel François Malan as Minister of Economics. From 1955 to 1956 he was Minister of Finance and Minister of Foreign Affairs until 1963. He represented the Union of South Africa Government to the League of Nations and the United Nations in 1963 and retired.
